Helping Indigenous Languages Survive

Following on from the launch of the Livescribe Ambassador program we’ve recently announced another initiative aimed at helping teachers across the region who work with indigenous languages.

The aim of the program is really simple – provide a Livescribe smartpen to teachers who work in Australia and New Zealand teaching students local languages or working with local indigenous populations to capture or document their languages.

Why?

Our thoughts are that the Livescribe smartpen would allow the teacher to create pencasts of the language – capturing both the written and spoken words – these pencasts can then be used in the classroom or stored in the school LMS for future reference. A teacher could take this even further and use the smartpen to create additional content or supplemental learning material

Could a Livescribe smartpen help local communities create an historical archive of their language – many of which date back many hundreds of years? I guess this is the question we’d like to understand or answer.

What is the Program?

We will provide a 4GB Echo smartpen to the teacher along with guidance so they can set it up and learn the core features.

What’s in it for us?

All we’d like in return from the teacher is a number of pencast examples so that we can blog about how it’s being used and whether the teacher has found it useful. Not a blanket endorsement – just examples of how a teacher has used the smartpen.

Want to Participate?

In the first instance, either check out the details on our Facebook page or read the registration form.

We hope by mid-June to have the pens in the field.
