I looked at this pen on the weekend and whilst I don't have all the detail, the one factor that is deterring me is the issue of being able to use the one pen on multiple computers. Currently at work I have access to at least 4 computers plus my laptop, if I can not use the pen in all areas then it is basically useless to me. If I have to license every computer then this I may as well just stick to the current typing and handwritten notes that I currently use.

Hi Mark - yes please! I'd use myscript on at least two computers if possible - silly to buy two copies but that's what I'm about to have to do... Ta for thinking of this.

Hi Mark,

First of all thanks for replying. After reading your comments I took the opportunity to look at the for forum on the U.S. site and found the following:

* Multiple comments about pen not recharging. 149 posts going back to June last year: http://www.livescribe.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3669 (Note: there topic is a sticky on the forum).

* Many entries regarding the latest 2.2 update causing a variety of problems. For example: "Pen won't transfer after upgrade to 2.2...", "Last FirmWare Update is Fowled Up", "My pen turned into a brick after firmware update" and others.

* Comments reported as of yesterday about the inability to do individual page deletes: http://www.livescribe.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7068

I could go on but I won't as anyone can access the same forum and make their own assessment. A point in the company's favour is that these discussions are available for all to see - they could have enforced a registration process where casual observers like myself are locked out. My point is that the ideas behind the basic functionality are sound and exciting but at this stage, from following the online discussions, the implementation is not at a stage that I am comfortable with when making a $300+ purchase. I certainly have not written the company and will continue to monitor things until the technology and support meets the quality expectations that I as a consumer have. Other folks with better skills that I or different expectations will make a decision to purchase.

Ian,
I have to challenge your comment about the software not being ready for prime time. Yes there have been some issues with the desktop v2 transition, but upgrades to v2.0.1 and recently v2.0.2 are really addressing these issues. In a small number of cases, obscure IT environments require further investigation to get the application working. I would be happy to rattle off a list of organisations around Australia - both in academia and business that are successfully using the product.

Comments relating to date resets and pages being deleted are hard to substantiate. Whilst these points have been raised here in comments, numerous requests for further information or to provide assistance have been met with silence. So I understand your point about the fundamentals of service delivery - but the flip side of this is that a user making comments about product deficiencies needs to be prepared to engage so as to solve these problems.

Feel free to contact me directly if you'd like to discuss the product further

Jane,
thanks for your response. Are you referring to MyScript or Livescribe Desktop? I wasn't able to determine this from your comment?

MyScript has been developed by a third party vendor - so any bundling of the software would need to involve cooperation across a couple of companies.

thanks for your feedback

Having just bought the pen today this was one of my first questions! I have three computers that I regularly use and was wondering about the software licensing (hence the reason I even clicked on this question in the first place). It seems absurd to have a single license for a portable product. I fully affirm everything said by the 2 previous users including the need for the software to be an integrated part of the livescribe solution. Having to attain it separately is an unnecessary added level of confusion. I personally believe the software should be integrated into the livescribe software rather than as a separate entity.

Cheers,
Jane

Damn, I was interested in purchasing the pen for learning Chinese this year but it looks like the software is not ready for prime time. Proxy support is not an issue for me but I can see how it would be working behind a corporate firewall. Resetting of dates upon upgrade and not being able to delete pages is a turn-off. I've worked around IT for 20 odd years now and yes there are problems from time to time with software releases but what endears users to a company is commitment to the fundamentals of service delivery. There are heaps of companies out there that set up forums and never appropriately address quality issues in a timely fashion. Anyway, looks like a great product but I'll hold off making a purchasing decision until the software issues are addressed.

Kingsley,
thanks for your response, you're probably at the extreme end of the scale in terms of licensed users and machines - but your point is a good one. There doesn't appear to be any mechanism to add additional users to a license without a 100% commitment to a new license.

cheers
